My name is Jonathan South and I am a Senior Lecturer and also a course co-ordinator in a Degree in Professional Policing at a university in the Eastern region. I have been teaching at this level for 6 years now on Policing or Criminology based degrees. I have also taught in 6th form and been a personal tutor in an FE College. I have a degree in Social Science and an MA in Sociology/Criminology. My PGCE was gained 2 years ago and I am working towards my Senior Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
When I retired from Bedfordshire Police I started my own university venture whilst working in a secondary school. In the police I was fortunate to work in investigative, reactive and preventative/reassurance roles. I spent time as a Tutor to new recruits and mentored several other officers. Coming into education later in life has given me an insight into some of the challenges that many of my students have faced. My top tip, do not leave that assignment until the last day. I have recently published a book chapter on Policing in England and Wales and am working on research in to Diversity in Policing and Investigating Police Misconduct.
I take a lead on teaching the Professional Degree in Policing, which I wrote alongside 2 colleagues during the lockdown in 2020. This was such a rewarding process and we worked alongside local police and The College of Policing. We were granted the licence to teach within 4 months of applying. Writing a degree has been one of a number of career high points for me and given me excellent knowledge of the requirements of the new routes into policing. Our main aim is to help our students become Police Officers who are confident in their skills and knowledge, and who take a problem solving and critical approach. They will become #changemakers.
Many Professional Policing Degrees now have similar content, they are just taught, designed and assessed slightly differently. Please do contact me for more information.
I also produce online courses on Udemy. You can have discounted coupons from me here if you want to study on them.
I frequently get asked about the new routes into policing. Please see my blog on this and the udemy courses about using your knowledge and skills in the application process.
